I Marine Expeditionary Force – HUMINT Exploitation Team 2
Al Samawah, IZ
• My time with HET 2 was my first real-world experience with interrogation. co-located with 2nd Battalion 5th Marines, I conducted investigations with the help of local civilian and paramilitary groups into weapons caches, illegal activity, and other events and people of interest to Marine commanders. Additionally, as individuals of interest were detained and brought in to the Mukhabarat barracks we were occupying, I conducted interrogations and formed initial assessments of what type of information said detainees may have access to. Information gleaned from my combined counterintelligence activities was used in in my reporting and became the basis of several successful operations. When loaded into the relational database I had created, my investigations and interrogations also helped identify detainees of interest that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.

I Marine Expeditionary Force – HUMINT Analysis Cell (HAC)
Camp Commando, KU
• I was assigned to the HUMINT Analysis Cell in January of 2003. At that time, Marine CI forces lacked a centralized database for coordinating intelligence gathering operations and researching the histories of people and facilities of interest. This was a problem because a HAC had never before been used at the MEF level and the breath and volume of information needed to support such a large organization exceeded what could reasonably be done with the personnel on hand. Identifying this need, I created a relational database which was queried by analysts for briefings and meant to help the far-flung HET teams conduct research and coordinate efforts. As the database grew in complexity and content, a multitude of fusion cells assigned to the G2 began to depend on it for timely and accurate information as well. The creation of this database gave a very solid understanding of not only operations within my area of operation, but also a fundamental knowledge in assembling a total situational picture from fragmented information. In addition, I also participated in countersurveillance and internal security operations.
